Care and Storage of the Collection

Space is often at a premium and so it’s vital to have a clear policy on what you’re going to be able to accommodate and therefore collect. Be sure that you have the space to securely store items in a dry and stable environment. Watch out for exposure to daylight and undue heat, both of which will speed up deterioration whether it’s a photograph, an old textile or even a CD.

Make several copies of a recording or a disk of scanned photographs and keep an eye on changes in technology so that you’re ready to respond before your collection becomes obsolete because it’s stored on a system that is no longer in use.
