Old documents, prints, books and paper items

Old documents, prints, books and paper items need careful handling and storing to stop them from deteriorating as time passes. While it is not always possible to create ideal archive conditions, there are some basic principles that you should aim to adhere to. Make sure everyone working on your project is aware of the following list of dos and don'ts

Don't use Post-It notes (they leave an invisible sticky residue which collects dirt)
Don't use Sellotape (it dries up and drops off over the years and leaves a sticky yellow strip behind)
Don't use metal paperclips - they can easily tear paper and often go rusty and create stains over time
Don't write on things in pen - use a soft 2B pencil
Don't subject anything to huge changes in temperature
Don't subject anything to extremes of tmepraratue
Don't expose anything to bright light
Don't punch holes in anthing for filing
Don't cram things into envelopes
Do keep material away from direct heat and light.
Do store things flat in protective envelopes or boxes (preferably acid-free)
Do look out for any sign of infestation such as dust in bindings, holes in pages, black 'bits' etc and do keep anything suspicious in a sealed plastic bag away from other material untio it has been checked.
