9 April 2001: BT donates historic collection to Museum of Submarine TelegraphyPress Release - 9 April 2001BT donates historic collection to Museum of Submarine Telegraphy A large collection of historic exhibits has been presented to the Museum of Submarine Telegraphy by BT. It includes the loan of historic radio apparatus that will be included in the new displays being mounted to celebrate this year's Marconi radio centenary in Cornwall. Around thirty objects have been delivered to Porthcurno, including a much-prized Direct Printer, originally from the Cable and Wireless Central Telegraph Office in London. This will be restored as a back up for the museum's existing printer which enables visitors to see authentic telegraphic messages being printed out, just as they would have during the Second World War. Neil Johannessen, Manager of the BT Museum, said: "We are delighted to be able to support the museum of Submarine Telegraphy by donating and lending objects which can enhance their displays. The objects transferred relate to the early years of international telegraphy and therefore, Porthcurno is an ideal home. Indeed, in at least one instance, the piece of equipment being transferred back to Cornwall was originally used at Porthcurno telegraph station." Mary Godwin, Curator at Porthcurno said: "For many years now we have benefited from the expertise of the BT Museum. They have been able to offer practical support and technical advice as well as provide us with objects for display. These new exhibits will be a valuable addition to the museum."
