Search Help & Tips

The Cable & Wireless Archive online enables you to search for text within:
  • D numbers, e.g. DOC/CW/1/2
  • Titles and descriptions
  • Dates, e.g. 1942
  • Companies of origin, e.g. EASTERN TELEGRAPH CO LTD

The search is not case sensitive so searching for 'Eastern' will give you the same result as searching for 'eastern', 'EASTERN' or even 'easTERN'

To narrow your search try using more than one keyword to search by, e.g. DOC Great Eastern

Most ID numbers corespond closely to a category of record. You can narrow your search by entering one of the following ID codes as one of your search keywords:
  • ADV - coresponds to audio visual records
  • DOC - coresponds to document records
  • MAP - coresponds to records of maps
  • OBJ or PK - corespond to records of objects and artifacts
  • PHO - coresponds to photographic records
  • PIC - coresponds to records of pictures
  • PUB - coresponds to publication records

There are 3 types of multiple search with which you can broaden or narrow your search:
  • Any Words - returns most records, i.e. any records which contain one or more of the keywords entered
  • All Words - returns records which contain every keyword entered in either the ID number, title, description, date or company or origin.
  • Phrase - returns fewest records, i.e. only those records which contain the adjacent keywords in the correct order
