Introductory talks are given in the demonstration area which show how the basics of electromagnetism enabled the development of telecommunications and how this all began with the railway telegraph network from 1837.

Within twenty years undersea cable technology developed to the point where a trans- Atlantic cable was a possibility. The demonstration bench has 'inkers', 'sounders' and an ABC telegraph which are explained by our staff and volunteers in ways accessible to everyone.
