Special events are a good way of increasing your profile. There is often funding available for special activities that coincide with a national or local celebration. Recent examples are Sea-Britain 2005 (celebration of Trafalgar), 60th celebrations of VE and VJ Days and Brunel 200 (celebration of 200 years since Brunel was born – 2006). By being creative you can usually find a way of linking some of these initiatives with your collection.

More regular annual initiatives include ‘The Big Draw’ (October) and Museums and Galleries Month (May).

These types of special opportunities are usually promoted by your local Museums, Libraries and Archives Council or you can watch the press or other museum web sites. Being involved in a local museum group will also allow you to catch up with new initiatives and associated funding streams.
