§ In 1870, the cable linking Britain to her empire arrived at Porthcurno. It was met on the beach by engineers and telegraphers from around Britain. Porthcurno grew as a result of the ever expanding Eastern Telegraph Company. It became the stepping-off point for telegraphers stationed around the globe. ■
